could see was the bloody signs of the hunt.  they at last concluded to rest.   Then Manibojou's brother said that they had better camp for the night.  All they did was to all walk in a circle X  then a larger hut was made.   They lived there for a great while as the [?] were having good success in hunting. and were getting abundance of game.  After a while Manibojou's brother and one of his nephews determined to leave. the camp.  They left one of the nephews to stay with Manibojou and they lived happily together. the young wolf killed lots of game each day.  Manibojou liked his nephew. very well. and always welcomed him home with hearty greeting.  One night the young wolf failed to come home Manibojou knew at once what had become of him. and that he was taken away by his former brother.  Manibojou felt very badly and went to look for him.   He came and then he saw a hole in the ice. and the tracks of his nephew. wolf and hunter where he was taken in the hole in the ice, Manibojou started out [4 unclear words] to get even with them for taking his hunter.  He [?] all winter till the spring when he came back with vengeance in his mind.   He went to the spot where he last saw the track of his nephew. and he caused the weather to be very warm. so hot. that the water was nearly boiling.   His scheme was to have all the animals come out of the water. and [?] themselves so that he might kill his offender.  He transformed himself into an old dry stick of a tree. and waited helding his bow and arrows behind him.  The animals began to come ashore in numbers and many different kinds. untill at last came his foe in the form of a large white wolf.   The wolf came to shade himself behind the only stick standing there. the old tree:  Manibojou. drawing his arrow to the head shot him twice and then ran for life. with many of the animals after him.   While Manibojou was walking through the woods musing over his success the day before. he heard some one crying. which startled him. and he went toward it.  He saw an old woman  cumming along with a large pack of Bass wood bark on her back  Hey! "Nokomis" (Grand Mother) where did you come from.  I went after some Bass wood bark! Well! what are you crying about?  then the old woman told him that their chief was at the point of death.  that Manibojou shot him the day before. and two of his arrows were stuck in his body. and that she did not expect to see him alive when she got back.  Manibojou then asked her
