74 of the white man is entirely the result of the labor of the squaws except perhaps the procuring of the buffalo from the hide of ? the teepee is made. The manner of making the teepee is as follows. The dressed buffalo hides are sewed together with leather and sinew thongs using an awl formerly of bone: now any piece of sharp stone to puncture the hide The shape is a cone open along the side. and so constructed that the opening may be secured by thongs. The apex i open and ? with two (2) triangular ring like appendages each provided with a pole to extend them and hold them in position as desired to influence the draught of air within the teepee and allow the exit of smoke: That is the theory: the practice is that the great part of the smoke does not exit but lurks within and bathes the eyes in tears continually. At the lower end of the slit in the wall is the door which is simply the new version of the two sides. This is covered by a flap of skin hung at the top and of a rectangular shape kept distended by two or more short sticks it is made wider than the door and is spread over it when it is desired to close the same. Within the house is simply a conical cavity all in and room there is no seperate apartment for the different members of the family and no atic for the ?: she is the hardest member of the lot of course and therefore the least valuable and being too the mother of the family her place in the household is at the door. naturally She has to make the fire, bring the wood. and then her other duties make it necessary that she should go in and out frequently so naturally her place is near the door. The place of honor is that occupied by her Lord, the man of the house he is opposite the door and furthest away from the draught. And it is also the safest place should an enemy enter the teepee he must get over the squaw and children before he could reach the "brave." Who if the squaw did not kill the "hero" might. It is supposed the Captain Wallers of the U.S. Cavalry met death by the blow from a war club in the hands of a squaw as he entered a teepee to demand the surrender of the hostile indians in 1890 at Pine Ridge. Dakota. The teepee is supposed to be the abode of a single family and usually it is, but it not infrequently happens that a row will bring his wife home to his father's lodge. And again where an indian is rich in skins, he will cause to be erected one or more teepees as ? ? In former days the teepee made
