It would appear that it was very badly provided with instruments - indeed the travellers seldom knew where they were - they crossed Red River, came to the Canadian Fork & took that for Red River! -  It is the opinion of some that they might have made a demonstration of resistance & it would  in all probability have succeeded..
Lewis the traitor - it is supposed had no criminal intentions until they got into the difficulty, & then to save himself - sacrificed the rest - This is M. B.L. opinion
