that the Arrapahoes were about to put to death a late squaw which they had captured. The soldiers rescued her and so I shall have a nice present to take to "my People" when I go. I wish I was a "Brave" instead. A little tobacco would compensate for a squaw - it would take a pony to balance a "Brave." But I shall be a good friend if I take them a squaw. Don't be jealous, if she is no cleaner than the Sioux I saw on the way. There is a surgeon here who has been vaccinating the Indians, along the Platte - he says he only found one of the "Braves" clean enough to operate upon without first washing the spot.
