THURSDAY, JANUARY 1, 1863
This was a great day in this city. In the forenoon all the distinguished military men in the city called in a body on Sec Stanton; at the head of the column was Gen Halleck. I recognized Gen H., Gens Hirst? unclear, Cadwalader, McDowell, Garfield &c In the afternoon I went to the Pres. reception. Had the pleasure of shaking hands with "Honest-Abe". He seemed in good spirits and looked well. Went to unclear "Soldiers Free Library" & along with about 2000 recd some apples & cakes sent by the ladies of Mass.
