3. As for pecuniary matters; I got back here a good deal behindhand. May was but half a month for my wages. My Expenses & spending have been considerably large for the past month etc. etc. etc. & perhaps I could have sent you $50.00 or last this Month's wages when I get it. As it is I am already spent ten dollars of it. & must have some in my pocket. When it (pay day), will come round I know not. However, I guess Mr. Field will lend me mine, and I will send you $30.00 in this letter, if I can get it. Please send some memorandum of present state of our assets.

What ground have you for affirming that Republican France of 1848, has "Wiser & better" men that the old Girondists? Are you acquainted with those same Girondists? Have you ever read Lamartine's History of the Girondists?

Your opinion of Horace Greely is probably too low. Is there an Editor in the U.S. his superior? or Equal? Is there any one who possesses, any where near the influence of Greely?

And is not not his influence pretty generally exorted on the light side? alway in favor of Law, Order, Morality, Philanthropy? (I write this with reverence and fear) Is not his heart bigger too? Asa Walker's, Austin Willey's, Asa Cummings & nobody cares who else all put together. He may have great faults- but such men, such Editors as Greely are scarce: especially since Wm. Leggett died. The best & most independent of N.E. political editors Buckingham, has just been killed of by Cotten. with several worthy followers, Robinson of Lowell, Wait of Greenfield, __ of Northhampton and several other honest men. But they say that in the towns about here, almost every paper, was stopped by indignant subscribers, as soon as the change of Editors was known.
By the way I was about as much amused as provoked at comparing the statements of some of the Boston Papers, Journal
