On the Water was the prettiest sight. long dragon boats from 80 to 120 feet long and some even 150 feet and only about 2 feet wide and painted and gilded in a splendid stile were pulling up and down the river. one of them pulled 88 paddles she went with great speed. at each end and amidships were platforms on which were dancers [crossed out: and] singers and juggler They exercised their tricks &c with surprising dexterity and the dancers were in some instances quite graceful. about every 15 feet in the boat were gongs on which men kept time with a stick or something of the kind, Each man kept time with a paddle and accompanied it with his voice. there were 8 or 10 of them with thousand of pleasure or flower boats looking on, it was a beautiful sight, In a large garden was spread out a feast of which any one partook who chose. this garden was beautiful place vines were led in such a manner as to represent almost every thing. Houses, Junks &c. Whilst figures of Animals were made of porcelain with open mouths and shrubs growing therefrom. or an elephant with a hole in his back and a small tree growing out, The Flower Boats are beautiful boats of pleasure. They are splendidly carved gilded painted and ornamented. They all are hired on these days of feast by wealthy Chinese who fill them with pretty Chinese girls.
