My Dear Wife Ettie Here arrived I safely last night, and found your nice letter of June 8th, and here I am longing exceedingly for one of later date. This was written before receiving any of mine, and I wrote to you almost every day. I wrote to you on the 7th at Boston, the 8th at Lewistown Penns mailed at Tyrone on the 9th, again on the 10th at Curwensville Penn. which was mailed at Luthersburg the 11th; and again at Brookville Jefferson Co. Penn. mailed there perhaps the 13th. I left Brookville Thursday night June 14th and rode by stage to Clarion, capital of Clarion Co. about 20 miles, slept two or three hours, and started again at 4am by stage for Calfish. I travelled stage in Penn from Tyrone in Blair Co. North West 100 miles through Centre, Clearfield, Jefferson & Clarion Counties, At Clarion I turned S.W towards Pittsburg, Fifteen miles from Clairon I found the Alleghany River at Brady's Bend, at the Great Iron works of that name. I was at Brady's Bend most of the day waiting for a Steamboat. It is a curious place - let me make you a diagram of the course of the river. [[diagram of river with Brady's Bend on left, Cedarbank Creek on right, Red Bank in middle]] From Calfish to Redbank is 10 miles by the River: by land 1/2 mile! From the Highway I came on one looks down upon the beautiful winding River and the little landing places, apparently right under feet. They seem much farther away vertically than horizontally! The hills which every where shut in the Alleghany River in this region must be more than 500 feet high. At Bradys' Bend are by far the largest Iron Works I have ever seen. There are about 40 Puddling stacks, and great Rolling Mills for Rail Road Iron making.
