A little more moderate today - attended a court in Marion Hall - the case was this - a returned Californian belonging in Augusta Iowa - left Fort Madison to come to Burlington on the 6th of January last since which nothing has been heard of him - and from some circumstances which have transpired the man who started with him to bring him to Burlington has been arrested and today he was tried or rather witnesses was examined to see if the Justices would indict him - Some 5 o 6 witnesses were examined by the prosecuting attorney going to prove that the defendant and the missing man started together but were not seen together in this city that was pretty nearly that was said on the side - in the afternoon some 10 or 12 witnesses were examined to prove the defendant an honest and trusty man that he brought the missing man safely to Burlington and returned home that afternoon - so that the Justices in less than 10 minutes discharged him - this Court struck me as a sort of Burlesque on a eastern court - the Justice and Lawyers sit around a table squirting tobacco juice over the floor - and it seemed to me that they were acting rather beneath that dignity but I am very glad that I have the opportunity of seeing the contrast between Eastern and Western customs - in the evening went to Temperance lecture in Marion Hall which was filled with the most respectable audience that I have yet seen in Burlington. the lecturer was Levi Leland I think he is the State lecturer - he is here in order to organize an association the object of which shall be to carry out the Prohibitory Law similar to what is called the Maine Law in the eastern States - he gave an interesting lecture interspersed with some very amusing Stories and anecdotes - |
