Fremont is small place just started on the opposite bank = a house that was unfinished in Vernon had already cost $17,000; a house of the same kind could be built & finished in N York state for $1500 = the shingles were not on & the windows not in & most of the siding yet to put on,, travelled about 15 miles = & camped 4 miles beyond [[Nichols?]] ranch on Bear river = at this time of year it is only a small stream, our mules crossed the stream in the night & we had some trouble in finding them, we here found very good grass - 8th we crossed the Yuba river a tolerable sized stream, camped again on the banks of the sacramento grass poor - 9th nooned by |
