June 19  Still lingering in Chicago.  feeling hast to get to my home.  hope the Ornes write speedily and make arrangements for us to leave.  In the evening went to convention heard Reverend speak for the Tract cause.  Mr. Kent of Galena spoke. He was formerly a tract his tribultion.  Mr Montgomery spoke & Mr Peabody who  displays a German Tract wh he found in a Western family, more than 300 years old, by Luther, I believe.

June 20 1847 Sabb.  The morning is glorious.  it seems as if all nature keeps Gods holy day  So calm and still is all around.  And yet man keeps it & not man breaks Gods Sabbath. This forenoon listened to a sermon from Rev. I. Z.  by Mr. Montgomery  {This is my finest Sabbath in Illinois} One remark was that I be part of the shr. has its [[unclear]] but it has no setting sun.  Therefore if you  know that a Christian has left his first love, you so not prove as some supper that it is the natural course of things or that God expects it but you know that man is a wretched, unfaithful, short sighted being.  After noon.  Mr Mervin or Merwin from Isiah 9 - 6 "His name shall be called wonderful.  Have enjoyed the day much and hop I have gained some things in the chr counsel  God be praised for all & that I was less worldly.  this is one of my transgressins

June 21  This evening reached safely my western home at Yankee settlement.  Left Chicago in the stage about half past eight.  reached Mr. Knopp's residence about eight in the evening.  Kindly received.  Have'nt felt such a sensation of lonliness since I left home as I did when Miss Weller left me at the tavern at Lockport to arrive by private conveyance here while she went on to Wilmington.  I was left alone, my companions all gone, I was a stranger in a strange land emphatically, so totally unknown to all about me When I reached home and found myself kindly received, it took somewhat from the sadness of my feelings

June 23 School began with ten scholars.  It does not seem possible that I am at the west teaching.  That I have begun my two years task - and yet perhaps not hard years for they may become tired of my company and dissatisfied with me in some way and then I must take my departure
