July 5, Enjoyed much last night in reading the views of George Beecher as represented in his memoir on the character of unclear & joys of heaven. My service never seems so lovely and heaven never so attractive. Praise to God for these views. July 10 - received a good long letter from father, mother & brothers H. H. has been home for some weeks sick - has now gone back & how full of gratitude sh'd I be that my friends are so well. Mother says E. Ireland is not expected to live. Hope she will be led to the Savior before it is to late. How many warnings do I know to be ready - may I heed them all. How uncertain. How fleeting is life that if we are prepared no matter how soon we go home to Christ in heaven. July 14 - mailed a letter home July 16 - Had a pleasant ride on horses set about two miles to a Mr. Collins' - one of the trustees of school here himself and wife seemed very cordial. Came home and as I looked at the beautiful moon and thought my N.E home far away and parents & brothers. July 17 - Visited this afternoon (Saturday) at Mr. Gross' with Mrs. Knapp. carried melodian - very pleasant time. Mrs. C come with me in the boat from Mackanaw? to Chicago. July 24 - kept school 1/2 day cold all forenoon & hot all the afternoon & obliged to be in bed. Felt bad enough - was as Mr. Clay Olney's bus went to Mr. Knapp's at night. 25 Sab. Spent at home on the best most of the time. Thought much of God, of the eternal world. My dear dear parents and brothers - what would they think did they know the state of my health now - but hope to be better soon. July 28 - School to day for the first time since Sat. and am so week and dizzy that I can just support myself. Mr. & Mrs. Knapp have been very kind indeed I have had no appetite at all. Cannot yet ? little things here, wh. are so grateful to the sick. 29 - rather stronger I think today and little more appetite . Been thinking a good deal of Poor E. Ireland - Oh that she may be prepared for death. Aug 1, Sabb, attended meeting in the forenoon. Heard that Miss Roberts is very near me - within about six miles - think she will come to meeting some Sabbath so that we may see each other. Troubled with wondering thoughts Oh that I may keep the Sabbath holy. There is a great amount of Sabbath sneaking here wish I could do something to prevent it and perhaps God will open a way.
