June 29th, As I don't intend to send my letter to you till after the new post office law goes into operation, I guess I will make trial of, it & see how much paper it takes to weigh half an ounce. This is rather thick heavy paper, but I reckon that one & a half sheets will pass. I feel a great respect for uncle Sam, now he has diminished his way fares, and mean to patronise him some by writing letters, and hope others will do the same by writing to me, after July 1st, I believe every body is determined to wait till then, as I do not receive any letter lately from any one. As for that tax against me in Milo, I hope Charles has not paid it, I think it can never be collected, nor was rightfully assessed I don't know but they could collect a tax of me now, though it would be rather a mean trick, and is never done of students but they could not then. My home for all legal papers was then at Foxcroft, and no where else. I was over 21, lived there, engaged in business there, received wages there; if I had not a residence there a young man can not have until he becomes a landholder somewhere. Now my residence is not here. A students never is at college! I suppose I must have one somewhere; but I think it would be hard to prove whether mine were at Milo or Foxcroft or Bangor now, I guess it would go back to Foxcroft even now in law, it was the last place I have been in any settled business I guess. All any rate, it would be a small business to assess a tax organisation any where. You rather misunderstood me that study was irksome to me. I don't think it is. I like to study as well as others at least. I had got rather worn out last term to be sure, the term was very long, I had little rest since last August. I had two weeks in vacation and now feel much better for study or any thing else. I think likely indeed that a liberal education would have done Joseph more good than myself.
