Sunday March 10th - Again I stay at home from meeting, partly on account of a cold, and partly because the walking is very bad. When I came from home I left cooked a turkey doughnuts, two whole hog shoulders, thirteen loaves of bread and two mince pies! Didn't I do pretty well? I find since I came here, that I need some kind of a handsome dress: having nothing of the kind except my black one, and that I have had four years, and it is entirely out of fashion, besides being | Sunday March 10th - Again I stay at home from meeting, partly on account of a cold, and partly because the walking is very bad. I find since I came here, that I need some kind of a handsome dress: having nothing of the kind except my black one, and that I have had four years, and it is entirely out of fashion, besides being lined throughout so that it is uncomfortably warm in moderate weather. My silk one is so small I cannot wear it with flannels at all. But I don't know if there is any help for it, except to "grin and bear it." Isaac needs a hat very much, but has not got his money yet for teaching school. Small means! "Great minds & small means ruin." Not that I would insinuation that we have great minds accompanying our small means. By no means. I never heard Isaac declaim really in my life till last Wednesday, and he really did much better than I expected. I laugh at him some for pursuing a College course so far before he has concluded whether to go or not. If he is not going he had better do something else. We may not write again before you come home & about getting anything if there is any way to get them - you know what we need I suppose. The boys need some linen for bosoms & dickeys Isaac especially, much; and I shall have to have something in the shape of clothes very soon. But you know best. Aff daughter Lucy. | ||

The school out on Stanckfield ridge, in which Isaac kept the village school long time ago was consumed by fire last Thursday night. Daniel Barker for Exeter was keeping the school. Gilman is at work on the house yet. I guess expect him 2 weeks longer now. I guess I feel sleepy & Eliab had it better a gone to Massachussetts . I don't know what else to write. Joseph. | ||
[top of page upside down] The people here are very extravigant in their expressions about Ann as a good teacher, - all with one cannot want her to keep the school this summer, but if I was here I should not- she can get better schools for higher wages. | |||
