Maple Grove Sep 18th 1856 Dear Mr. Kendall:

Your friendly letter of the 10th Inst. I received last Tuesday evening.
Last Saturday evening that long-look-for Daguerreotype of yours, found its way to Maple Grove; and by the same mail came an explanatory message, which unravelled the mystery of its long detention. Your Daguerreotype was welcomed by us all, & from sweet Allie, brother Samuel's little girl, it received an abundance of kisses. My mother, & those of the family who have seen the Original face, can see much in its likeness that looks natural, especially about the upper part of the face. I have given it an introduction to my sister, Tyler, who never has had the pleasure of seeing the Original, & she seems much pleased with its looks. unclear, I seem to hear you ask, "What does Abby think of the Daguerreotype?" I will tell you, Mr. Kendall, for I know you are expecting me to. But I hope, if from my impulsive heart, there comes one imprudent word or thought, & escapes from the point of this pen

(written up left-hand side) You ask me of I have forgotten you. Here is a sprig of "Everlasting", which I plucked from the summit of yonder mountain just one year ago. Please accept it, as it has for you, my answer. Good-bye
