June. Tuesday, 30. 1863 Spent the day very busily mustering the troops at this place.  Very hot and I had to desist in the middle of the day.  Got through- except the 9th La. Genl Dennis came up near night to learn the news. Col Shepherd afterword came down and put the rebel forces as very large. Our scouts did not report the force as very large.

My birth day.  Mustered the 8th Reg and about noon the [unclear] and myself started for the front.  Went up in Genl Dennis Boat. Took Supper  with {unclear] and rode to Genl MePherson by moon light--Found friends there [unclear]Col Wilson and other members of the staff

Thursday 2Started out this morning. Went to [[unclear]] Hospital.  Saw Mrs Powell. Then rode to Genl Ransoms & had a pleasant meeting.   Visited the fort under direction of Capt. Powell of Battery who superintended the construction.   Went clear up to the rebel lines.   Firing not very heavy.   Stood with Genl Ransom
