The enemy have opened fire on us from their batteries across the Appomattox.  Their fire [[unclear]] us our batteries also [[unclear]] other parts of their lines.  Our firing directly in front has been less brisk than yesterday but we still continue to pass shots out to them occasionally while the 19th [[Marine?]] which has a flanking fire on one of their positions keeps up a continual fuselage, this beyond doubt is very annoying to the poor rebs for my experience goes to show that an [[unclear]] fire is much the most to be dreaded.  That a citizen may understand this, you'll explain, if you have [[unclear]] in your front they will protect you so long as the fire come from that direction; but if, the fire comes on your flank what is to protect you?  Besides, a bullet coming from the enemy's front, if it comes too high, is harmless, but if it comes on your flank, it will pass on down your lines and finally [[unclear]] among your men.  Again, if it comes with force enough it may harm more than one man.  I was please at a remark made
