She is very well and seems quite happy she says she finds excellent society in Quincey. She says they have a reading circle that is very interesting. I do enjoy very much to sit down with a congenial friend and read and talk about what I’ve read. Josephine and myself used to spend our evenings in that way when we were well and I assure you I miss it very much She used to save anything she found that she liked to read with me. You know not how much it enhances the happiness of life to have such a companion, and you cannot know until you have such a companion. How few such companions there are in the world. I am inclined to believe there are more women than men that desire intellectual and spiritual companionship. Man is to apt to become absorbed in his business, and to take no notice of anything that does not affect that business. I believe that a majority of women have yearnings inexpressible when first marrying for social companionship but whose hearts are frozen by the icebergs in hearts where they have reason to expect A living fire. Do you not think so, Abby? What a terrible chasm it must leave in woman’s heart when she is unable to enjoy that soul communion with her husband that she so much desires. Lydia wrote me that the Rev Mr Billings from New England ( Unitarian Minister) calls on her frequently and that she enjoys his society much. Do you remember him?
