Sir:

            I see from the "Report of Persons and Articles", that the lease for the building now occupied as Headquarters Offices and for Clothing warehouse, expired the 1st day of November last, and I understand from you, that no new lease has been made, and the the proprietors have demanded an increased rent from day of expiration of lease - Extent of increase asked, I do not know,- which demand has never been accepted or rejected, and that we are now occupying the building without knowing how much rent we have to pay.  I do not wish this to continue any longer.
    You will please communicate at once with the proprietors or their Agent, and learn if they are willing to re-lease the building at the rent paid before, six hundred dollars per month, and if so to make another lease without delay.  If not, to see what other building can be found that will answer our purpose, as I am unwilling to accede to the demand for increased rent - believing that suitable offices can be procured for the same, we are now paying, or even less.

Sir:

                I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 7th inst, and I am directed by the Commanding General to inform you, that he does not deem it necessary or advisable to ask for any cooperation from the Civil authorities in the matter referred to, but asks that you keep him advised of the condition of affairs on your frontier.   A Detachment of two hundred/200/Recruits are Enroute for assignment to the 10th Infantry.
