In a day or two after this, the morning was close cloudy & sultry, occasional showers, rapid flashes of lightning & deep booming thunder resounded over the gulf - then came on a furious hurricane ranging from N to N.N.E. with torrents upon torrents of rains - sheet & forked lightning of the most vivid description with its accompanying quantity of thunder - all this Elemental strife was increased if possible at intervals, & with occasional heavy falls of large hail storms. This continued about four hours, when it subsided, the sky became blue again & the freshness of spring succeeded. | ||
Much damage was done to the shipping in the harbor; the garden was almost ruined, some small wooden houses upset, others twisted from their foundation into the streets, which now had a zig-zag appearance |
