It is said that about the commencement of Lamar's administration an American and some Mexicans from Santa Fé waited on him, informing him that the people of Santa Fé wished to separate from Mexico & join the Texans, & that in the event of a sufficient Texan force being sent them, they would hoist the banner of the single star & become Texans. | |||
There were several cogent reasons for such an arrangement . The following are the principal. | |||
1. Having Santa Fé would define the Texan boundary de facto. | |||
2. The transit of traders &c would open the country from Galveston to the Rio Grande, thus settlers would flock to the line of [?] of trade & render that line of country safe from indian depredations. | |||
3. The Texan ports would soon be crowded with foreign depots and thus a speedy prosperity to the rising republic was anticipated. | |||
