themselves - But would have done but little trade - Then the Majority company the expedition were these who had little else to employ themselves - others for want of excitement - and a very few with Scientific views - They did not pursue the route they proposed - they got lost bewildered - disgusted &c -  they departed [[?]] at last some went on the hopes of facilitating the views of the expedition - they then finding there was opposed by armed forces - gave up their arms, & thus became an easy prey of the enemy - they must have suffered much in crossing the country - more so hastily on to the City of Mexico - their [[?]] in chains in its streets for so long a time - & here are some 160 of them in a most deplorable state of poverty & [[?]].

Tuesday 23.  Santa Fé prisoners landed - below the Town - in a short time they got clothes - they appear in [[?]] lot & from a [[?]] - lately from Mexico - It is thr bayonet alone that keeps Santa Ana in prison -
