Afternoon went to see Count de [?] & family 10 Miles out up the Bayoou - found them in a most miserable plight - sulky & disgusted - The Count though of [?] a plantation has a[2 unclear words] someone in charge - [?] & comes here occasionally - these are too dry lands for Cotton & not wet enough for general farming & more particularly with lands of a ranchman the [?] here was distressing [two unclear words] -
Afternoon went to see Count de [?] & family 10 Miles out up the Bayou - found them in a most miserable plight - sulky & disgusted - The Count thought of establishing a plantation here &  then bringing someone in charge - [?] & comes here occasionally - these are too dry lands for Cotton & not wet enough for general farming & more particularly with lands of a Frenchman the future here was distressing utter [?] -
