On this account much of the labour and expense of mission schools have been wrested into the service of sin. On the account the philanthropist is often led to regret that any Cherokee has been taught the English language. But notwithstand all the cunning, and artifice, and example of men in high standing, yet the distinction of the poor Cherokees could not be effected by individual effort. An army, containing as many soldiers probably as there are adult Indians in the nation, was thrust into the country. There soldiers were armed with guns, bayonets, swords, pistols, and all the horrid artillery of death. The Indians were robbed of their guns, and in the heat of summer, huddled into camps, or driven beneath a burning sun to the west. The fever and dysentery are now desolating the camps. Most of the infants fall victims to disease. Being destitute of milk and butter, and greens, and all kinds of vegetables, of which they have been accustomed to an abundant supply, and confined to the coarsest corn meal bread and meat, the little children, as well as many others, readily sicken and die. And not only so, but they are taught, by the example of those in whose power they are, to prostitute the Holy Sabbath to secular concerns, and to blaspheme the name of the ever blessed God, in their most common conversation, and to trifle with the most sacred institutions of our holy religion.
