This subject, how shall the bulk of the people decide it? And if christians are first to determine concerning the right, by which their rulers possess and exercise authority before they think themselves bound to obedience they must very commonly indeed be engaged in opposition to the existing authoritism (Scott) Now if the President, by his agent, H. Montgomery Esq. had ordered us to leave the Cherokee Nation, no doubt every one would have complied. But instead of that, he declares that, in this case, the right of direction belongs to the Governor of Georgia, and he of course assumes the right, and orders to remove our residence from among the [Ind.?] within the chartered limits of Georgia. Whether this right belongs to the President or the governor, is a question which none but the high judicial authorities in the U. States can decide a question which we especially, are not authorized to decide even if we were competent judges. Therefore in my opinion we are bound to obey, if obedience implies no direct disobedience to God. Thus Dr. Bogue dec.? - bible verse 23. "It is only when christians are commanded to do things contrary to the law of God that they are to refuse obedience" Again, to missionaries, "Inculcate a spirit of peace;" a disposition to bear with evils rather than contend fiercely for what may be considered as rights." Dr. Scott is also to the point. The resistance which consists in refusal to yield actual obedience to the law of the superior.
