Shortly after he manifested] his quarters - Senor felt him - hunting the flea jumped for his life. He was gone - but it was but a day or so - when I found Mr Flea had selected me for his next victim. Carefully I laid an ambuscade - but missed my purpose. I saw the flying insect leave my wristband. Twas a narrow escape. Mr Flea concluded I suppose to decamp - from so dangerous quarters after this second escape. We heard no more from him anyway.  
Long talkative Sumner sat down by our cradle as I was washing out Saturday.  We conversed upon the wages the island paid us - "I have got to day" said he - "six dollars - I dont think it much - in fact it is not much in California - but if I was at home and anybody was to offer me six dollars a day - I should jump after it quicker - and think I was doing well amazingly too!"  
    Called to see Pagan - found him convalescent - His old prejudices - and opinions - are returning with double force. Calomel has saved his life - yet Calomel is vile stuff. He gave me a certain specific for jaundice - but there was so many herbs compounded that I could not recollect them. Culvers Physic was the chief. Prickly ash - Wild Cherry.
    Called at the tent of the Missourians to see about accompaining them on a prospecting tour up into the country. Had quite a a conversation with one of the Austins - about reading character. I told him the result of his investigations would be the conclusion - the more he studied men - the more certain he would become - of the impossibility of determining what men are - or what courses of conduct they would pursue.

Our dirt averaged to day as it did on Saturday- 61 cts to the bushell. But our hole has retorted out. It required the utmost resolution to work on patiently.
