There have been several cases of Insanity in this country - which are puzzlers to account for. A few days ago - Stone who has been teaming all winter from Sacremento - was seized with insanity - without any bodily ailment apparently - not having been drinker and has become a raving maniac. Exposure - retarding circulation in the extremities may have brought it in - yet even this with all other conjecture leaves the cause in doubt. Several persons I have heard of who have become deranged. Bosworth who died here a short time ago - became a mild lunatic in this country - A man at the Missouri Dam - has gone crazy - after working all summer. Can the excitement of gold - be a cause of these derangements.

This too is California.  Bernicia beats the world for fleas - in the summer. Their numbers beggar imagination. Of several nights I spent there - I could not sleep - on account of them. Dr N - his family were completely eaten up.  Tommy was sores from head to foot - the effects of their bites. I could concur of no worse torment - then to be forced to stay in Bernicia. It is a war - endless - and completely without hope. At San Francisco also we were troubled with these insects.  Here we have the good fortune to escape.  Camp life does not suit
