I promised that after breakfast I would pay him & his party a visit, which I did he doing the honors of introducing me to the Chief, Campos; there were only four or five families of them there, all busily employed drying over slow fires venison & beef, so as to preserve & render it more portable for travelling; they were pretty good looking, but somewhat dirty. Campos asked me if I was a 'Capitan' I explained to him that as yet I was only a Sergeant in the Texas Volunteers 'Soldier' said he. 'Yes' I replied 'Si Si Sergeant same as Capitan' he continued "Sam Houston Great Capitan" - "Burleson, La Mar, Great Capitan." He then drew from a sort of helmet, & what appeared to me a bundle of rags; he began unfolding x it & after some time produced parchment testimonials of brave conduct in the field signed by Generals Houston, La Mar & | |||
