   The Barbacue was held in a large open space; the tables of a right-angular form x with seats on each side, & to keep the company from the scorching sun, thick canvass overhead; this was absolutely necessary for it was a very hot day. Early in the morning the company began to assemble, coming in from the different parts of the county; Planters & farmers with their families on horseback, buggies & Jersey-waggons under the shade of the large & magnificent Live-oak might be seen groups not merely 'village politicians' but men who had fought hard for their adopted country & now discussing the merits & demerits of 'Old Sam'  some called him 'traitor' others of a calmer nature would give him another trial believing that he was the only one to get them out of a 'scrape' & arrange an armistice or a peace with Mexico. The Ladies & children remained in the houses of the town until the arrival of their
