My dear Husband;
Your kind welcome letter, was received early this week, and I was very glad to hear from you, and know you are feeling well; and that your great comfort, and most excellent housekeeper, Laura, is also well.  I thank you very much, and fully appreciate, your kind offer, to let me remain here, with our pleasant friends, the Berges.  I do not wish to remain , one moment, after dear Fred leaves, to go to visit you.  I do not feel that I'm improving at all, in this Mountain air; my appetite is very poor, and I do not take the least interest, in going out to try to exercise here;  because we are completely surrounded in this valley by hills and high mountains, and I lose my breath so, that there is no comfort for me, off the [piazza?]; on which I sit a great deal, out side of our nice cheerful rooms.  It is a great trial to me, being so utterly deprived from reading, by the Gout haveing affected the sight of my eyes;  thank God though, they are better, during the last six weeks,  then they have been for the past two year.  You

Pawlet, Vermont. August 3rd 1888. My dear Husband; Your kind welcome letter, was received early this week, and I was very glad to hear from you, and know you are feeling well; and that your great comfort, and most excellent housekeeper, Laura, is also well. I thank you very much, and fully appreciate, your kind offer, to let me remain here, with our pleasant friends, the Berges. I do not wish to remain , one moment, after dear Fred leaves, to go to visit you. I do not feel that I'm improving at all, in this Mountain air; my appetite is very poor, and I do not take the least interest, in going out to try to exercise here; because we are completely surrounded in this valley by hills and high Mountains, and I lose my breath so, that there is no comfort for me, off the piazza; on which I sit a great deal, out side of our nice cheerful rooms. It is a great trial to me, being so utterly deprived from reading, by the Gout haveing affected the sight of my eyes; thank God though, they are better, during the last six weeks, then they have been for the past two years.
