Hugh was butcher at Fort Hays. & has followed me around ever since as Boon does. When I was ordered on this campaign. he begged to come with me & I told him that if he could drive a team I would give him one. He took the team & though, I doubt if he ever drove before made a pretty fair driver - In the early part of the campaign, when Mackenzie was "down on" me he was also "down on" every body who he suspected of a liking for me. All the teamsters that came with me came in for a share of this - & 'Old Hugh got mad & quit . Mackenzie acted like a pig to him - tried to keep him from getting his pay.
