86 who died in the waggon) and a My Wyatt of Quincy Ill. Both were buried at the same time. Death is so often now among us - that the living are careless of his visits. The presence of the dead - varies not the usual pursuits in the surmounting crowd. Senor conducted some appropriate exercises at the log house - and read the burial service at the grave. We were called upon to contribute towards the burial of Bosworth. A list of the items may be curious - to show the cost of burial in the mines. Cost of boards (pine) for coffin $50.00 Making $26.00. Laying out of Corpse &c $25.00 - Digging grave $16.00 - Total $117.00 So are we put under the ground here - no show of sorrow - and but little of respect. Was called across the ravine to see a patient. Tools my lantern and umbrella and went forth. Returning the water was so high as to forbid my jumping it. Pitched along the bank through the mud - through the brambles and the murky darkness - to when a tree had been felled across - and after a narrow escape from falling into the rapid muddy flood - arrived home to our camp.

The river this morning presented an example of one of its sudden rises. Notwithstanding former experience many miners have lost their machines. An one single bound the water has exceeded all its former limits - completely submerging the island - and so altering the general appearance of its banks as scarcely to be recognized as the same river. The rise has been about twenty feet. The rapidity of the current is surprising. It flies like an arrow - it boils and foams among the rocks broken in an hundred eddies - trees once high on the bank - and bushes with dripping foilage - sway and tremble in the rushing stream - logs and drift stuff plunge heading [down]. Now down some whirlpools centre and now flying on the broken waves. How they leap - how they whirl - how they plunge - how they scatter. Was soused in the ravine trying to cross. Dignity and all went down columpus into the mud. Like Neptune however I came up dripping with the honors of the flood.
