Moderate, gentle exercise, warm bathing, gentle laxative diet; if you could only live upon our N.H. "Rye & Indian" Bread. If your bowels are not perfectly free, lax & easy, by all means attend to it, and carefully. A Pill as big as a small Pea, of Rhubarb taken every night will do you more good than all the medecines of all the Doctors. But above all things do not get to taking the Physic & medicines of the Doctors. As for my health, I am careful of it. I have learnt wisdom. I intend to husband it to the best possible advantage. I have much to do with it. Health has done much for me, & I intend to be careful of it. I have drawn largely upon a large stock. Probably not much more than one constitution in ten would stand unimpaired the Draft of my Collegiate Education. I believe mine did. Since then I have in Eighteen months dome the work and gained the station perhaps of four years of Engineering, and I believe have not injured my health. Perhaps I have weakened my Eyes. They are the first part of the Engineer to fail. The use of Telescopes in the field is hardest of all business for eyes. Drafting by night is bad enough My Eyes are still strong & capable of powerful service, & accustomed to it too. Moreover I have already placed myself so high that I can generally have others to look through the glasses for me; and if I am prospered as heretofore may in a few years be in condition to receive salaries without nearing Service |
