The Muskingum is a charming river seeming to me about a third longer than Pisquataquis; It curves gracefully around the city on the western side; Steamboats meet the canal from the north connecting with the Ohio at Marietta. The country around in every direction is fine indeed. Two or three prominent hills quite near covered with handsome residence and groves add much to the beauty of the scenery the ground all around command my admiring gaze, the immense trees so tall and straight of oak hickory and elm. chiefly not an evergreen to be seen. while the ground beneath is as level and smoth as a grass plot before a door.
