This forenoon at the First Presbyterian Church I heard I think quite a character; Rev Dr Smith, an old | This forenoon at the First Presbyterian Church I heard I think quite a character; Rev Dr Smith, an old Scotchman, a very big man very awkward & slovenly in his appearance, strongly nasal in his pronunciation; but, I judge, very extensively educated {I can think of no better term} a great logician and reasoner, considerably eloquent and with as much power, depth and compass of voice as I ever heard. He is certainly a great preacher! I think very few men could be more effective as a field preacher. His sermon this forenoon was an excellent one, about an hour long, of close argument, without notes, and by no means dull. | ||

I believe I must stop, and write a little to the folks in Maine, just to let them know I am going to St. Louis tomorrow, thence by Steamboat to Cairo and Caledonia.
