The lady who rather had the direction of matters, is the wife of Capt. Johnson of the N.J. who was in actual service on one the forte near Lake Champlain, more recently had the command at Markinaw where he was convested in rather a remarkable manner, had previously been quite regardless of serious things, accustomed to carouse with brother officers but accompanied a female friend from politeness, to a prayer meeting, was impressed and from that time took a decided stand, informing his associates at once of the different course he would pursue and taking upon himself at once the duties of a Christian. I have attended two delightful concerts of the Alleghanians (tickets presented - have been out to evening parties some, and attend singing school once a week, and am studying Latin! besides this I have bought quite a sizeable blank book and commenced a journal with the new year which I pompously entitle "Incidents of Western life," - do you not think I am busy? I have a great mind to quote from it my account of new years day. 'Breakfasted by candle light, company had passed the night, a gentleman from Mass. teacher of music, conversation on musical vibrations, 32 to the lowest note, 8 more to each higher - harmony most sweet to the refined ear when dissonant sounds are overpowered by sweet tones, Mr. Hopkins compared it to moral beauty greatest when, by conflict, goodness and excellence triumph over evil; is the sentiment correct? It reminded me of Taylors Sat. eve. Will it not appear in the end, that in the diaposon of the universe, the moral dissonance now so perpexing to us, will but enhance the sweet harmony of the whole? Went to prayer meeting at 10 o'clock, - good meeting. P.M. Heard Mr. Marks rector address to Sons of Temperance in Epis. church. The body of the church was filled with fine looking men - a fine opportunity to hold up before mind, truth, personal responsibility, sound principles, &c. it would have done me good to have heard Prof. Shepard, or Mr. Pomroy address them, - I heard a curious medley, nothing
