   In their hierarchical history are some circumstances extremely attractive of attention. Sacrifices were as universally prevalent in America as in the old world, where they had spread over all countries. It must have sprung there from an origin of positive institution. There is nothing in nature that points it out or conjoins it; & no doubt it last came from the sacrifice made by Noah, as his disembarkation from the ark, on the forebence of the grand cataclysma, or deluge: (Gen: Ch VIII.v.20. And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; & took of every clean beast, & of every clean  forest, & offered burnt offering & on the altar. When we find it in America, are we to imagine it commenced spontaneously, without an original, & extended itself universally over the whole continent?
