I was invited to enter the lodge of the Indian* who had brought me down the evening before, found him with his friends smoking & chatting.  The pipe was passed round & I smoked two or three whiffs & found the "kinnikennick" quite agreeable - Their pipe-bowl are made of a red stone of close grain & susceptible of a high-polish - It seems a fine quality of sandstone & is procured at the "pipe-stone quarry" which is situated distant
