Another thing a New Englander notices in this city, or indeed any of the smaller ones I have been in in New York, (Troy, Albany, Utica, Schenectady, Hudson, the great variety of languages heard in street conversation and seen upon the signs. In some streets half the signs will be something besides English, from "Deutscdhe's Gast Haus", to "Coiffeur de Paris," &c. &c.

I made yesterday an application for a situation as Division engineer upon the Great Illinois Central Rail Road.  I shall remain here until Tuesday morning, hoping to receive an answer. If not I think I shall start that day out over the Erie R.R.
