were singing - we could not helping stopping to listen to them. The Institute scholars, threading their way, two and two, through the light and shade under the trees, formed rather an interesting scene. I do not know as I have told you that we are almost entirely surrounded by evergreen forests, which not only help to keep us warm, but are very beautiful. In some spots where the brown and withered leaves of the oak are interspersed, they seem to have almost the beauty of the Autumn woods.

Jan. 13. I rose at five this morning - have had a nice walk, and have finished copying my Composition, hand to Mr. Russel this morning, and now I can write a letter with a light heart duty before pleasure, you know is the maxim. I have plenty of Compositions to write. Our Rhetoric scholars bring in one every Monday morning, the French class must be prepared for the exercises of Tuesday & Friday class in Retoric have prepared one nearly every day. Whatever I do, I am thinking continually of composition. I think it has been very profitable to me, though it is somewhat, wearisome. I suppose we shall have a little change in our exercises this week, which will be very agreeable. I have read two compositions, on the stage, and sung twice. Is not that considerable for little Nettie to do? We have quite a company of visitors, on Tuesday and Friday evenings. Last Friday, a large company come from Manchester. We have frequent visits from friends of education. Since I wrote, Prof. Samuel Wilson, an elocutionist- has been here. Dr. S.S. Lambert had been here and delivered six very interesting lectures on Physiology. He is from New York city - but is lecturing in Boston this winter.
