Capt of the company and offered me the first lieutenancy in the company and I proceeded at once to Salem the capitol of the state and the general rendevous sic of the troops. This was about the last of February 1865, and on the 14th March I was summoned before the same examining board, as Capt. Applegate having declined the appointment, was examined and accepted only one question being asked and that a mathematical problem in writing in which the following is a copy:

"If a soldier is allowed 1/7 of a cord of wood per week with 1/3 added, N. of Lat. 42 (sign for degrees) N.What would 10 soldiers be entitled to in 11 3/4 days."

I thought I had had been accustomed to unknown for some time past, yet this was a stumper and it was some time before I succeeded in producing the correct result.

I was asked no further questions but was requested to be on hand to be mustered into service on the 17th when the company was duly mustered into unknown the service of the WS by Lieut. Wm. Capus, 1st lieut of the W.T. Infy who had been commissioned for that purpose. William Grant was mustered in as first, and David W. Applegate as second lieutenant.
