here also we found persons pretending to do and order every thing on their own etc. but when we found the right man matters were done very | here also we found persons pretending to do and order every thing on their own etc. but when we found the right man matters were done very satisfactory and I would recommend every man who travails this rout if things does not go right, to apply to [[Mr.?]] Adams the managing [[unclear]] of Hannibal & St. Jo. Road and he will at once set matters right in all my travails in Europe or America. I never found a more Gentlemanly and Efficient Manager, doing all in his power to Serve the Company and give Satisfaction to travelers I must not forget the man who superintended the Loading of [[our?]] car, and the conductor. Hannibal is a city of about the size of Quincy. the RR seems to do quite a large business at this time. I think the city trade is [[dul?]] judging from what we saw some of the best [[unclear]] block in the City was [[burnt?]] down totily giving a dilapidated appearance to the City. from the Hill on the S.W Side of the place a fine panoramik view of the City is had. the Hill is some 200 feet above the [[floor?]] of the RR Depot below. Illinois from this point appears woody. We can see the bluffs in the [[eighth?]] Burlington [[unclear]] consequently we view three states at a glance. having all our matters on board the Cars we started out at 4 o'clock P.M. for St. Jo. after passing a few miles West of Palmyra we entered on some of the most splendid dry prairie I ever saw altho the crops through the whole route are miserable in consequence of the Drought they say that no Rain has fallen for [[some?]] 5 months and the land in the neighberhood of Hannibal is litterally parched and seems as if all life was suspended. We could not get a bale of hay |
