The assistant is a fine teacher and man, not twenty two but combining much more of dignity firmness true gentleness and manliness -a splendid specimen of a man. I wrote to mother quite a description of our examination of two days and evening, with room ornamented with evergreens illuminated with church lamps, filled with a great crowd. I decorated with my new black silk, and about half a dozen other ladies and as many gentlemen being seated conspicuously near the stage sung with good effect occasionally, from the Alpine Glee Singer (have you seen it) The Merry Sunshine, Sigh gentle gales' The Dream 'Alpine Singers song', 'Erin is my home': Etc, etc, etc. The pieces in that book are nearly all secular of rather a gay light character the music excellent - fine harmony - I sing Soprano. We (i.e.) Miss Wodbury and myself quite keep house by ourselves, purchasing candles and wood for ourselves, having little intercourse with the family except at meals, we receive calls in our room and it is ever the appreciated place of rendezvous for all the 'corps' of teachers of this great academy once a week to consult advise concerning the administration of affairs. Mr. Johnson is a feeble looking man of an uncertain air and gait yet coveting all responsibility standing however I believe in a little awe of me. Miss W
