I think I may depend upon having a profitable school this quarter, for I have got well started, and shall not have, I hope so many drawbacks as hitherto, both my others terms were interrupted on accounts of sickness, so I had to deduct for absence, which lessened my profits nearly one third. I had to have a new stove too, the air right which was first put in, leaked so bad at the funnel that I was obliged to change it for a common box stove, which, as the first remains on hand in an extra expense.-It has been in my heart all along to send you five dollars as soon as my last quarter bills were past, and I do'nt know, now, how to deny myself the pleasure of doing it, as I must, for the present:- my necessary expenses at first, in commencing, obliged me to anticipate means, which has kept my funds low: 15 dollls. that I borrowed of Lucy last fall, I have been repaying, ten dolls. of it, while she was here in March She was here three weeks, and a nice time we had; she almost decided to remain this spring and help me, and study herself, she giving her time in part, and I paying her board; but we concluded that it would take so much for dress in order that her stay might be any benefit, and as I have a young lady in school. 18 years old, who wishes to assist me enough to pay her tuition, it would be better to save the expense till some other time; I wish Lucy could be here, well-dressed a year of two: it is just the time |
