List of Grievances of Unmarried Women

In this list of grievances, the author, known simply as Mademoiselle P., proposes certain reforms regarding the treatment of unmarried women and their role in political and public spheres. The text is divided into two parts. The author begins by addressing women at large and then goes on to talk about the general sentiments they have regarding the way they are treated. The second part of the text outlines eight specific proposals dealing with women’s issues. Although the majority of proposals concern law and taxation, there are other themes mentioned: adultery, fashion, dowries, and equal education. This document allows for insights into the lives of unmarried Frenchwomen during the Revolutionary period.
