Uncertain Boundary Area
01 Oct 1804
The
boundary from the Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains between the United
States and the British possessions was unsettled. The northern boundary of the
Louisiana Purchase encompassed the Missouri River drainage basin, and as early
as January 1804, the United States regarded the parallel of 49 degrees north
latitude as its northern boundary. However, the boundary was not officially
established until 20 October 1818 when the area became part of Missouri Territory.
(Paullin, 60, pl. 93; Van Zandt, 25-26)
20 Oct 1818
Uncertain Boundary Area became part of Missouri Territory when a
Convention of Commerce between Great Britain and the United States established
the parallel of 49 degrees north latitude, from the Lake of the Woods to the
Rocky Mountains, as the northern boundary of the United States and southern
boundary of the British possessions, ending uncertainty over the national
boundary. The United States thus gained undisputed possession of the northwest
part of present Minnesota and much of present North Dakota, while Great Britain
