By royal proclamation King George III organized former Spanish Florida into the new British colonies of East Florida and West Florida. East Florida encompassed the territory east of the Apalachicola River and south of a straight line from where the Apalachicola is formed by the junction of the Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers to the headspring of the St. Marys River and thence down the St. Marys to the Atlantic Ocean. Demarcation of this boundary line and agreement on its details by Florida and Georgia was not achieved until the 1860s. As part of the commission to West Florida's first governor, Great Britain redefined West Florida, extending its limits northward to a line running due east from the junction of the Yazoo and Mississippi Rivers to the Chattahoochee River.
