Boundaries were: on the west, the Mississippi River; on the north, a line running due east from the mouth of the Yazoo River to the Chattahoochee River; on the east, the Chattahoochee River; and on the south, the parallel of 31 degrees north latitude. Mississippi Territory covered the south-central portions of present Alabama and Mississippi. Georgia claimed this area under its colonial charter, and the federal act stated that the creation of the territory would not impair Georgia's claim.
